1Zpresso ZP6 vs. K-Ultra Manual Grinder Review | French Brewers Cup Champion Charity

Charity — Two-Time French Brewers Cup Champion

Charity won the French Brewers Cup Championship in both 2022 and 2024.

During this 1Zpresso live brewing session, she brewed several coffees from different origins and processing methods while alternating between the ZP6 and K-Ultra hand grinders.

Rather than saying one grinder was “better,” she mainly focused on how different grinders and grind settings can influence flavor and overall cup profile.

The ZP6 Grinder Review

Throughout the session, Charity used the ZP6 — the grinder she described as her “favorite grinder” — with several different coffees and shared her impressions.

The ZP6 User Experience: Lightweight, Good Grip, Easy to Grind

Charity mentioned that the ZP6 has a really good grip and is very easy to hold. She also described it as lightweight and easy to travel with.

She added that it works especially well for people with less hand strength, since grinding feels very efficient and does not require much force.

She also mentioned that some grinders can become difficult to use with very dense coffee beans, especially with very light roasted coffees. However, with the ZP6 and other 1Zpresso hand grinders, she said she never really had that issue.

The ZP6 Flavor Profile: Clean, Clear, Juicy, and Complex

While tasting the coffee brewed with the ZP6, Charity described the cup as “super clean” and “super clear,” while still maintaining complexity and juiciness.

When comparing the ZP6 with the K-Ultra, she mentioned that the ZP6 especially brings out “clarity”.

Using the washed Panama Geisha she brewed during the session as an example, she described the cup as elegant and clean, with jasmine, orange blossom, white floral notes, and beautiful acidity.

The K-Ultra Grinder Review

The K-Ultra User Experience: Fast Grinding, Magnetic Catch Cup, Solid Build

Charity specifically pointed out the K-Ultra’s magnetic catch cup design, saying it feels secure during use and does not easily come off.

She also mentioned that the first turn can require slightly more force, but after that, grinding becomes very fast and smooth.

In terms of grinding speed, she said the K-Ultra is probably the fastest hand grinder she has personally used.

The K-Ultra Flavor Profile: Balanced Sweetness and Acidity

According to Charity, the two grinders can present coffee differently depending on the coffee being brewed.

While brewing a Honey Process Geisha with the K-Ultra, she described the cup as having bright acidity while still remaining sweet, resulting in a cup profile that felt more balanced.

The ZP6 vs. K-Ultra: How Charity Chooses Between Them

When someone asked which grinder was better, Charity did not give a direct answer.

Instead, she explained that the two grinders are simply “good for different things,” and that the choice depends largely on the coffee itself.

For the Panamanian washed Geisha she brewed during the session, she felt the ZP6 brought out more clarity and cleanliness in the cup. She described the coffee as elegant, floral, and citrus-forward, while still maintaining complexity and juiciness.

The K-Ultra, on the other hand, gave a different presentation. While brewing a Honey Process Geisha, she found the overall profile more balanced, with sweetness and acidity appearing together more naturally.

She also mentioned that, for her, the K-Ultra feels more versatile overall. Besides lighter roasted coffees, she felt it also works well with certain medium to darker roast profiles.

Beyond flavor, Charity also talked about differences in everyday usability.

To her, the ZP6 feels easier to hold and is convenient to travel with. The K-Ultra feels sturdier in hand, grinds very quickly, and benefits from its magnetic catch cup design.

She also shared that she personally owns both grinders, and even before traveling, she still finds herself wondering which one to bring.
